AI-Powered Diagnostics Across 15+ Imaging Modalities

April 22, 2026

AI-powered diagnostic tools have reached specialist-level performance across more than fifteen medical imaging modalities. The breadth of modality coverage — not just depth in one — is what distinguishes the current wave from earlier narrow-AI systems.

Modalities with FDA-authorized AI/ML tools include: chest radiography (pulmonary nodule detection, TB screening, rib fracture triage), chest CT (pulmonary embolism, lung cancer screening), brain CT and MRI (stroke triage, intracranial hemorrhage detection, aneurysm detection), breast imaging (mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, breast MRI), abdominal CT (appendicitis, bowel obstruction), cardiac imaging (echocardiography ejection fraction, coronary CT plaque quantification), ophthalmology (diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma from fundus photography), dermatology (skin lesion classification), pathology (whole-slide image analysis), and several others.

Specialist-level matching is modality-specific and task-specific. “Matches radiologist accuracy on non-contrast head CT for intracranial hemorrhage detection” is a different claim from “matches radiologist accuracy on diagnostic mammography.” Peer-reviewed validation studies exist for individual claims; no single system spans all fifteen-plus modalities.

The clinically relevant question is workflow integration. A tool that matches specialist accuracy but takes twelve minutes to produce a result is less useful than a 95%-accuracy tool that produces triage flags in thirty seconds. The latest generation optimizes for integrated workflow: direct PACS integration, prioritization of worklists, and structured reporting output.
